Greeting fight fans, big news is in the pipeline with the biggest being the announcement of the May fight for 2016 on Pay-Per-View. With that said, here is the latest edition of Around the Ring:
1.“Canelo” Chooses Opponent – Earlier this week it was announced WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his title against former super lightweight champion Amir “King” Khan on May 7th in Las Vegas. The contest will be waged at a catch weight of 155 pounds which is more commonly known as the “Canelo” weight. Although Golden Boy Promotions, the sole promoter of the event, has a hold of the MGM Grand Arena, it looks like Oscar De La Hoya is looking to hold the event at the new Las Vegas venue, the T-Mobile Arena. As of posting it has not been confirmed.
2.“GGG” Gets Opponent Too – Another fight that was made official yesterday was Gennady Golovkin’s defense of his IBF middleweight title against ranked Dominic Wade on Saturday, April 23rd. Golovkin captured the title late last year with a TKO win over David Lemieux. No word where the fight will be held but K2 Promotions has a hold on not only the Madison Square Garden in New York City or the Forum in Los Angeles.
3.Mares Back – A battle between former champions has just been announced when three-divisional titlist Abner Mares faces fellow three-divisional champion Fernando Montiel in the semi-main event on Saturday, March 12th, on CBS. In the main event of the Premier Boxing Champions event, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman will face former champ Shawn Porter. Inexplicably, the fight card will take place at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Mares, who is now trained by Robert Garcia in Oxnard, CA, and Montiel will meet in the featherweight division.
4.Heavyweights in Action – If the Leo Santa Cruz vs Kiko Martinez for the WBA featherweight title wasn’t enough for the fight card on February 27th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA, the rematch between WBC super bantamweight Julio “Pollito” Ceja vs Hugo “Cuatito” Ruiz has also been added. Another fight on the card will be between undefeated heavyweights Gerald “Gallo Negro” Washington against Oscar Torres of Colombia in a ten round big man showdown. The Showtime broadcast will also feature the super bantamweight unification fight between IBF’s Carl Frampton and WBA’s Scott Quigg from England.
5.Bruno Wants Comeback – In a shocker, former WBC heavyweight champion Frank Bruno of England mentioned on a British morning show earlier this week he wishes to come back to the ring at fifty-four years of age. Bruno was diagnosed as bi-polar and was prescribed a medicine which he states leaves him with a lot of energy. Bruno has been working it off in the gym which shows in his physique but he says that is not enough and wants another crack as a professional. Unfortunately, the British Board of Boxing has stated they will not be issuing Mr. Bruno a license to get back in the ring.
