Aalan Martinez didn’t always love boxing but his older brother Evan did.
“I blame it on him,” Aalan laughs. “[Evan] was always trying to get my dad to buy him some gloves. Just for at the house, you know? So one of his friends told him about a boxing gym. So he started going to the gym with his friend and I would always stay home and I wanted to go with him.”
Soon the eight-year-old Aalan could bear no more the sight of his brother and his friend leaving for the boxing gym to train. He asked if he could tag along.
“He said, ‘If you’re going to go, you’re going to train. You have to run’ and stuff like that. So I did. And little by little we started training and our trainer started showing me how to do everything right. How to stretch out. How to work the bag. Then I did my first amateur fight and continued from there.”
Aalan continued to the tune of wins in the Junior Olympics, Nationals, and Silver Gloves among others. Though competed as an amateur as a 122 pound fighter, Aalan now competes as a professional in the 126 pound division. At 5’9” with a long reach, Aalan is big for his weight class and he uses it to his advantage.
Training out of the Eddie Heredia Boxing Club in East Los Angeles, Martinez has the very best sparring available. He’s worked with other ten world champions and experienced many competitive rounds with the likes of former world champion Daniel Ponce De Leon, current bantamweight world champion Abner Mares, and former world champion Michael Katsidis, and former world champion Jorge Linares. When IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz won his first world title on Showtime, he publicly thanked Aalan for preparing him for the battle.
And all this from a kid who just wanted to hang out with his older brother.
“[I do this] for my older brother,” says Aalan. “He was the one who liked boxing. And I always tried to be like my older brother.”
